Compounding is the 8th wonder of the world. The only other wonder being that the majority of people start with $0 if they are lucky (lots of people start off with student debt). For someone starting with $0, it would be impossible to catch up with someone already with $2 million compounding at 10% annually. Even if they have a high paying job making $200,000 and keeping $100,000 growing at 2% a year, the difference is shown below, blue line indicating the millionaire at the start:

The gap gets wider and wider, even when they invest that money into the market. Now imagine all the people with more than $2 million, unless someone wins the lottery (starting a business is a lottery where you fail 90% of the time), this difference will never be covered. Even if you suppose your wage grows at 10%, the same as capital, since the millionaire started at 2 million, the gap will evermore widen even when growing at the same rate.

Compounding extends more than just money as well. I believe compounding also explains the divide against the smart and dumb. When someone is raised in a constantly stable environment with food, enough learning materials, and low stress, they learn better and that rate compounds on itself. For example, if we assume (with good scientific backing) better nutrition and resources to study and read regularly increases the rate of learning by 0.1% per week, you learn 5% better a year and compounding over 10 years that’s 68% faster. Now if you compare the 2, it is night and day. This is why people of low financial standing score worse and are falling behind.

How did the initial capital start?

Capital often started the chest via war, plunder, slavery, colonialism, violence, then scaling via stealing surplus value and the usury fees. Banks supported empires in the early days of colonization via bonds and other instruments to fund conquest. This is an ongoing process with relevance now, but there are much more complex financial machines that turn the engines of capital nowadays.

Weaving with the loom, despite happening long ago, displaced many jobs of sole proprietors and skilled workers. With the work of many now replaced by the work of 1 + a machine. With economies of scale, they were organized into huge warehouses to work under 1 roof for 1 boss. How can sole proprietors compete when this warehouse saves on shared heating, lighting, and is more space efficient than 100 separate houses, 1 for each sole proprietor? Certainly this was better than before. More fabrics, less physical work and mental strain. Sure, a lot of your friends are no longer employed but they can find another job in another factory. We can all produce more. It sure is better now than before with all this new technology and cheap fabrics.

This is where we find ourselves with AI. No longer will skilled workers toil in sweat and mental haze. The magic AI slot machine will probably have an answer for you. In fact, why need skills at all when you can build an AI system controllable by cheap labour. Software is cheaper than ever, systems are cheaper than ever. Instead of a team of engineers, we can get AI to design the prototype and to run customer tests, guided by 1 person. We certainly don’t need a customer representative, when we can just have an AI system and a few contractors in the back to classify anything else that are edge cases. Certainly this is better.

Say, what happened to the others? Surely they found a job at another factory. It seems interesting that all other factories compete in a manner to reduce costs, therefore, there are less and less jobs of the like. No worries, I’m sure they can jump to a new industry like those fancy new self-driving cars.

No matter, I have the skills to persist, despite the pool of hiring being shallower and shallower. With this hard work and higher productivity, I wonder why the pay is still the same as before? They save so much by having less people, but I keep working harder and harder. Nevertheless, this is certainly better than unemployment.

You may be wondering at this point, when does it get better? Let me tell you, it already has! Not to the average worker, of course, but think of the capitalist. They can monopolize the market and extract so much profit! The rate of return is huge and only gets bigger with compound interest. AI as with other machines and technological advancement just needs to beat the average in terms of cost to save money. Skills do not matter when sewing by hand versus mass production with the loom. When AI systems proliferate more than they do now, we will wonder, is it getting better yet? Certainly this is better… right?

As the year comes to almost a close, a year end review is required.

What has been achieved, what has been learned, and what is to be done next year. Although I have not had any significant changes in my life, a lot has happened. Most of the time was spent on stacking cash and building myself up financially.

Some of my new goals are, learn Chinese, keep building businesses, and taking control of my time.

Now I will record a wrapped of 2025 and my predictions of 2026.

Themes of 2025

1. FUD

Fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Whether on blaming of immigrants, tariffs, or H1B, everyone was on edge. As economics conditions deteriorate for the average person, it gets harder and harder to get by. When such times occur, a scapegoat is needed, whether that is the current leader in power, or immigrants, or some other non-sense. The systematic situation will never be addressed. Decades of no progress on cost of living, housing, youth unemployment, and inflation are not caused by a single leader or immigrants. Regardless, since they are easy to point to, they will be blamed. This problem will get worse, even as the scapegoats are culled. Nothing will cause the cost of living to go down or housing to get better unless the underlying system is put in question. Why should inflation be high when it was promised that technological innovation would bring down the cost for the same quality or increased quality for the same price? Why should housing value go down when we have built the system to support and protect the value of housing for boomers and the privileged?

1. AI

AI was written everywhere but what actual useful products did it create? See predictions for a detailed breakdown.

1. Alternative facts

The internet is no longer attached to reality. Soon this will spread to the offline as well. Because of the speed of disinformation (disinformation spreads faster than facts because it is more sensational and thus more viral), people can no longer agree on reality. While this may present some people hope in creating arbitrage opportunities (see Kalshi interview), this presents a disaster for the rest of the world. The polarization and divineness means “solutions” presented by anyone will face increasing scrutiny. However, instead of causing deadlocks, in our bourgeois democracy, the will of the public matters little and the instruments of capital will further consolidate. AI is speeding this up along with general capital accumulation like media mergers and manufacturing consent.

Predictions for 2026

1. More gambling, infinite gambling

Gambling is one of the most addictive vices with a 10% suicide rate for addicts. This trend will accelerate as gambling or “prediction markets” capture the market, but especially the whales. Additionally, all aspects of life will be gambling. Perhaps banking will have a lottery system or other horrors beyond human comprehend. Already, our lives have many gamification features like infinite scroll and even AI code generation which have probabilistic rollouts.

1. AI bubble partially pops

AI is not going anywhere but it has far outgrown it’s usefulness so far. No one is using AI features and no one has found useful AI features for general or business consumption. Per consumer side, there has been a huge backlash to non-human works and so called “AI-slop”. Going forward, AI will be used to enhance current apps and only create durable usefulness for currently dominate apps. For example, Google search embedded with AI. As such, this will result in larger monopolies. No new huge vertical will challenge existing players. Control has been centralized such that mergers and acquisitions are no longer challenged (see groq, windsurf, etc). They will simply be folded into old players. There has already been a pushback on AI art and in studies, users refer features that doesn’t advertise AI to those that do claim AI enabled.

Now per business side, there will be a huge gap with rhetoric and praxis. Since AI was a justification to reduce variable costs and employees, efficiency did not actually improve. AI slop in the workplace will require more people down the line to fix and remediate. This realization will not happen in 2026, but soon after as businesses break down from AI slop. AI is truly a 10x engineer in requiring 10x the amount of work after to fix it. AI is so far from useful, it is challenging to see the hype stay so high. As such, I do expect a general slowdown. When such a case happens, the economy will go down the toilet as majority of growth sectors are supported an otherwise un-useful tool. Massive bailouts and stimulus will be provided that rebound the markets but otherwise do not solve the structural weakness underneath the foundations. Current AI may at max expose bullshit work, but could have happened with or without AI.

1. Market Capture

Monopolies will get fatter and profit margins will explode. When companies increase profit margins, they have 2 ways to do this. 1, increase prices or 2, reduce costs, the highest cost most often human labour. Currently both affects are active to a large degree. Companies may hide price increases in shrinkflation or decreased quality or they may use algorithmic pricing. Companies capture all value by segmenting pricing based on how much each individual can maximally pay. Additionally, lots of companies are cutting from the other end by reducing wages and increasing efficiency.

While all companies and firms will do this, increasing prices can be addressed in a competitive market. In a competitive market, that would be an opportunity for other firms to compete since as Jeff Bezos put it: “Your margin is my opportunity”, however, firms have been too big to compete against. They will price you out (sell at a loss) or buy you outright. Thiel and this theology of massive moats and blitzscaling is another way of saying building massive multi-vertical monopolies without competition because this maximizes profitability. As the economy moves more and more into rent extraction, the average person will get further and further behind. Capital always grows faster the more capital you have.

It’s me

Wow, can you believe it! One year without an update. Almost unbelievable such a thing could happen while gen AI and LLMs take over the world!

Believe it or not, I have been doing tons of things. Other than working full time at my job, I have been waiting for more time to free up to do my extra projects. It remains elusive on how I would achieve this as I play badminton on Tuesday, alternate between badminton and board games on Wednesday, reserve one day on Thursday just for calling my various contacts, badminton on Saturday and I reserve 2 other days per week for my girlfriend. That leaves me with one day which would most likely be filled with an event in the community (often tech) or some other thing that has come up for hanging out with people. Even relaxing is difficult although this is self imposed. However, what takes the majority of the time is cooking meals and cleaning up. Every time I am cooking and cleaning up, it ends up around 7:30 at least. When I do get time, I will do some 3D print on my Bambu Lab A1 mini and some art.

Although the world has been increasingly filling with more and more AI slop, we can turn away from technology and embrace our humanist side. Everything technological after calling and texting people is too extreme. Let us embrace community based events and reject virtual corporate playgrounds for their benefit.

AI

It seems to me like AI is reaching the top of the S curve and is quickly slowing down. Without a paradigm shift like composition of systems and RL based online LLMs, it is likely to not achieve scale prophesied by most. This is great news for ML researchers that are in the money for decades and decades to come and bad news for hypeman, trying to ruin the world. As we enter this new age, I say we squeeze the hypeman and capitalist that know nothing about the industry for every cent they have got.

Well school is over and I’ve graduated!! I now have a degree although the ceremony for it comes a bit later. What does this mean? Well, no more school which leaves a lot of time to do the other stuff I’ve been meaning to get to! More art, more projects, more everything! Look forward to it and I won’t disappoint in the releases, it’s a promise 🤞.

School Review 👏👏

Now I will review all the classes I have taken throughout all my school years. First off, some analytics since I love data.

This is my mark distribution with a clear normal distribution for CMPUT courses with the mean between A and A- and everything else at a mean around B. (note CR means credit as was used when covid first happened and W means withdrawn.)

Here is another chart to have a percent breakdown in the form of a pie chart. Clearly, I’m not doing the best, I am just an average student as I was not interested in academia and was always pursuing something to the side that kept me distracted from school to the annoyance of my parents.

My courses

Now I will go over my courses one by one as I have taken them starting with year 1 semester 1. FYI, there are 2 main school semesters in a school year. One for fall and one for winter but half terms (condensed) in spring and summer.

Year 1, Sem 1 (Y1S1)

• CMPUT 174 - Intro to CMPUT 1: one of the easiest classes I have taken, given I was coming in with python experience already, it was a trivial pursuit, easiest A+.
• ENGL 103 - Novel/Socio-Political Critique: This is a normal english class, very stressful with in class written essays with short time limits but was not too bad.
• MATH 117 - Honors Calculus 1: this is one of the hardest math courses and absolutely no calculus was taught. In fact, Professor Terry Gannon did derivatives only on the last day of class. It’s just a pure math course with only proofs. A great place to build camaraderie with your fellow classmates as you all suffer together with no idea what is going on. You are not expected to have any experience before this course on abstract math and proofs.
• MATH 125 - Linear Algebra 1: A very solid course for linear algebra. Professor was good and was well taught but I barely remember anything from this although it would have been helpful.
• STAT 151 - Intro Applied Stats 1: I hated the professor, could not understand anything he said unless I did 101% focus. This was a common complaint and was the only thing notable about this course. Otherwise it was just a plain applied course, no theory.

Y1S2

• CMPUT 175 - Intro to CMPUT 2: This was a class about general data structures and a much more rich experience than 174. It wasn’t the best when we suddenly switched to online halfway throughout the semester because of covid. Also in python!
• CMPUT 272 - Formal Logic Systems: basically a repeat of MATH 117 but I was so significantly bored, I almost failed this course. It was so easy, I overestimated the need to study and underestimated the course content.
• ENGL 102 - Critical Analysis: Just another english course, pretty standard. Read a book, analyze it.
• MATH 118 - Honors Calculus 2: One of the hardest courses I’ve taken and a reason I did not continue in more honors courses. Again, like MATH 117, it builds camaraderie with classmates. Additionally, a professor with a name that rhymes with Derry Dannon may or may not have abandoned us for CalTech or some other university in California.
• STAT 252 - Intro Applied Stats 2: Had a very good professor for this course that made it bearable but it isn’t the most exciting course.

Y2S1

• CMPUT 201 - Intro to CMPUT 3: Supposedly Professor Lin made this class easier for this semester compared to other semesters and that’s why I enjoyed it. It was an easy guide to C.
• CMPUT 204 - Algorithms 1: This is the first algorithms course and my only one 😳. This course is great for interviewing but was a touch light on content. It covers all the basic algorithms and procedures except sliding window and a few others. Slightly touched on graph algorithms too.
• MATH 225 - Linear Algebra 2: I do not recall anything in this class, except the professor was ok. It was probably important but also forgettable. I do recall we did a lot of backtracking through linear algebra 1 because some students did not take that course in a long time.
• MATH 228 - Algebra Intro Ring Theory: A very easy course by a new German prof. Lots of repeats from MATH 117 since this would be the first proper proof course for many. The professor said praxis and mixed up quite a few German words with English ones which was funny.
• PHYS 144 - Honors Physics 1: I completely shit the bed on this course. Something about the instructor and online just didn’t work and I wasn’t the only one. We had an average of 2/30 on the second midterm and were allowed to redo it. Since I had taken both honor calculus previously, I did not recall how to do a derivative or an integral in a short amount of time and got burned. In pure math, numbers aren’t real. I’ve heard a lot of students switch their major away from physics after this one hehe.

Y2S2

• CMPUT 229 - Computer Architecture: This was one of the lowest GPA average courses I was in. The course average was 1.6 (remember F is 1.0), meaning a lot of people failed or just passed with a D and a few superb outliers skewed everyone to the right. This was a result of the labs being optional when they were not optional for learning. I did a couple of labs and did ok. Could have done better, but compared to everyone else, I escaped unharmed.
• CMPUT 291 - Databases, databases, databases: This is **THE **important class. You need to take this class in addition with 301 since it is so useful. Doesn’t matter if you are going into academia, compilers, or graphics, everyone will touch a database at some point because they are everywhere. Please don’t skip out on this course.
• CMPUT 296 - Basic Machine Learning (now 267): A very math heavy course that focuses too much on the theoretical instead of applied personal. Also quite a bit of stats I missed from honors stats instead of the applied route.
• CMPUT 301 - Intro to Software Engineering: This is another important class like 291. You need to take this class since it’s about project management and working in a team. You not only learn about software abstractions common in Java UML 🤢 (also no one uses UML in industry), but you learn about scrum as well. Literally cannot miss this course if or if you don’t work in industry. Also, make sure you have a good team picked for this course.
• ECON 101 - Intro Microeconomics: this class is pure Austrian School of Economics bs propaganda. It covers all the line go up tropes you would expect in something so elementary.

Y3S1

• ASTRO 101 - Black Holes: Not sure why this is even a course. It covers black holes as the title suggests but everything covered is so basic, all the physics can be learned elsewhere and basic facts about black holes aren’t that interesting by itself. It’s a freebie course for many including myself.
• CMPUT 296 - Games Artificial Intelligence (now 256): Very fun course to learn about AI in games (not ML) like pathfinding via A* or state machines or behavior trees. Also quite practical if you want to go into game dev, like I did.
• MATH 241 - Geometry: this was the same professor as in my linear algebra 1 but the way she taught this class was odd and illogical. Proof questions were fill in the blank❓❓. Anyways since I was working 2 part time jobs at the time, I dropped this one with a W and just took 3 courses.
• PHIL 325 - Risk, Choice and Rationality (Game Theory): I hated this course from the bottom of my heart. It was basically a math course disguised as a philosophy course. Now granted, I didn’t do terribly in this course but it hurt my psyche.

Y3S2

• CMPUT 401 - Software Process/Product Management: Basically unpaid intern work. You work on a project from an actual client and you pay the school to do it while the school gets paid by the client 🤡. Really ethical course. You don’t get to pick your team and depending on how it shakes out, you might be in a bad team, but the projects aren’t that high stakes so you should practice tempering down expectations with the clients and not overpromising.
• ECON 102 - Intro to Macroeconomics: More line go up but for the economy as a whole. Trying to establish a linear relationship between macroeconomic concepts was laughable. This is a great course to have fun critiquing as it is going on by asking questions. Also the professor wanted us to buy his textbook that he had written for a profit. This was unethical and I called him out. This guy has no shame.
• INT D 248 - Loneliness Matters: These INT D courses are freebies and you should take them at all possible opportunities for a free, easy credit if you need it. You just need to buy and read a book and answer some questions.
• MATH 322 - Graph Theory: Honestly this course could be skipped. For most cases graph theory isn’t used but take it if you want. Was interesting but might not be too useful. Also this confuses a lot of people, graph theory is not about line and pie charts - graphs are a construct of a set of edges and nodes/vertices. A network is a graph, not a pie chart like you see at the very top of this page.
• SEM 330 - Exploring Entrepreneurship: I get to experience a business class for the first time and it’s laughable. There was nothing entrepreneurial about this course and I’m not sure how these business students can start a business with no technical understanding but just fleeces the other co-founder or first hires since they are less knowledgeable about the non technical stuff.

Y4S1

• CMPUT 200 - Ethics of Data Science and AI: This course is actually quite technical and not a written ethics course. It goes through some very interesting stuff like data obfuscation and data leaks in the technical, computational manar, for example, linkage attacks. This course was new so it was light on matter, therefore it could have condensed way down to ½ a semester.
• CMPUT 300 - Computers and Society: Unlike CMPUT 200, this is a written course. Everything was an essay but you did get teammates to split a 2 page report with. This meant it was extremely easy since everyone could just hammer out not even a page and be done with a quarter of course in one afternoon. Also ChatGPT was released at this time so I’m sure quite a few people used that. Not sure how it is now (I guess this applies to all the courses I’ve taken, things might have changed since I am writing this in the start of 2024).
• CMPUT 302 - Intro Human Computer Interaction: This is a UI/UX course. It was pretty generic, nothing special and some applied, some theory. Note, you may have to sketch in this course.
• CMPUT 474 - Formal Languages, Automata, Computing: I can’t stop saying this was an interesting course. Honestly, a must take course just for how good it is. The theory of computing I find to be very interesting and you learn about finite, pushdown automata then work your way up to turning machines. Even if you aren’t into theory courses, you’ll most likely find this one interesting.
• ECON 281 - Intermediate Microeconomic Theory 1: Somehow this goes through a lot of the stuff within ECON 101 and still goes through the troupe of line go up. It is much more computational.

Y4 SUMMER

• PHIL 120 - Symbolic Logic I: This is just MATH 117 or CMPUT 272. I’m not sure why I took this other than for a free credit since it goes through the same stuff. I was working full time this summer so that was probably why I did such a freebie (also since CMPUT courses are almost never available in spring or summer).

Y4S2

• ASTRO 120 - Astronomy of the Solar System: Kind of similar to ASTRO 101 but more boring. For example you learn about the phases of the moon. Real yawner class.
• CMPUT 331 - Computational Cryptography: One of the most interesting classes I’ve taken. I might have a bias since I do capture the flags and never dived into cryptography but it’s definitely well worth it to learn about legacy and modern cryptography. Obviously you aren’t going to implement modern cryptographic functions but you also learn about cracking ciphers and shit!!
• CMPUT 365 - Reinforcement Learning: This is the famous course within the department and we even got a lecture from Rich Sutton at the end. It is just the coursera course though so be forewarned. Also note it gets pretty theoretical.
• CMPUT 366 - Search and Planning in AI: This is like games AI 2. You cover a lot of the same thing like pathfinding, A*, but new in our year was multi-agent pathfinding and conflict resolutions. Not sure how useful it is but I recommend taking this before most of your other ML and AI courses because it covers so many topics but not that deeply. It also goes into some basic ML topics but just barely.
• PHIL 250 - Contemporary Ethical Issues: Honestly this course went by in a flash and having just taken it, I could not tell anyone how it went or what was taught in it. I believe we only went through ways to analyze issues and metaethical theories. We also slightly touched on some contemporary issues using this framework like antinatalism.
• STS 200 - Intro Studies Science, Technology and Society: This used to be history 499 before it got changed to this. You go through 2 books and the lectures. The professor for this course is extremely odd and doesn’t have slides and just talks in a simple background and you just have to write the notes since he doesn’t even have transcripts. Also the professor records in a museum and cosplays in the lecture. Honestly you could read the works of Ted Kaczynski and you will have covered everything in this course (only barely joking with that one). You have to do 3 in class essays, so not too bad. Remember the industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster!

I’ve recently started journaling and it’s been great. I’ve been getting all my thoughts on notion and also organizing my notes (also categorizing inspirations). I believe notion has been one of the greatest tools invented because it is cloud hosted and has multi-media capabilities so I can check out links and images instead of just text based paper notes. Additionally, notion has cool AI capabilities to summarize each day. Maybe I can run it again and have a meta summarizer for a month or year.

Relaxing

I can’t believe my internship is almost over as mine ends on August 25th 😱. It came through so fast and ends in a flash. I hope to make a lot of these last few days. Overall it was an exquisite experience and once in a lifetime opportunity. From game development to prompt engineering and ML, I’ve covered a lot of ground in some eye opening experiences!

Barbenheimer

Recently I watched Barbie and Oppenheimer and I have to say, they were both slaps. I watched Oppenheimer first and even though it was 3 hours long, it only felt like 1.5 hours. Now Barbie was just pure fun and entertaining. Ryan Gosling was goated and was literally me (jk).

The Metaverse sure does have a lot of ML and GPT (AKA worse regex). Jokes aside, I am having so much fun working on the team. It’s also interesting that a CTF took place during my time there and I got 3rd place (up from 5th place last year). I even received $50 USD for winning + swag! Otherwise I’m just biding my time and finding work like my new vlog styled post on the TinkeringPenguin YouTube channel.

Other verse

I watched the new Spiderman and it was amazing. Really recommend such an awesome movie. I also tried a custom awesome/arch setup which made me free like I was living in the future but in the end I couldn’t run Adobe apps so I switched back to Windows 11. Additionally, I couldn’t get GPU passthrough to work on my desktop that I built because it did not have integrated graphics and I couldn’t find an easy way to partition the GPU or pass through the GPU completely but have graphics still on the host machine.

School

I’m taking a freebie summer course of Phil 120 which is an easy first level logic course. Should run into no trouble as I still have to work full time, fingers crossed.

School Life

Thankfully no school, as I have decided to drop out of the spring courses as I don’t think I can handle the shortened schedule of spring semesters (2 months long). Hopefully I will still be able to graduate after fall this year but this does put it in question. Nevertheless I am hopeful I just need 1 more semester.
